Spain in the 20th century was a complex place; between the Spanish Civil War, Francoism, and the end of the dictatorship, many authors and artists were forced into exile or created art that dealt with the end of an era. Important early artists, like Picasso and Miró, will be examined in this environment as well as the underappreciated school of Abstract Expression that developed in the second half of the century with artists such as Manolo Millares and Barcelona star, Antoni Tàpies.
