Get a brief overview of the legal procedures in a death penalty case: from what offenses qualify for a potential death sentence to selecting a jury, to the final jury questions a jury is required to answer. Discuss what mitigation is and the requirements for defense counsel when representing someone accused of a case in which the state is seeking the death penalty. This is a single lecture on 3/7.

Edythe Payan is a lifelong resident of El Paso and is a Deputy Public Defender at the El Paso County Public Defender's Office. She has been practicing criminal law for almost 30 years and has experience litigating homicide cases as a prosecutor and as a defense attorney. As a defense attorney, she has tried death penalty cases.Despite the serious nature of her day job, she enjoys Texas Longhorn football and "training" her Border Collie puppy!Bridget Sakells
Ms. Sakells practiced psychiatric social work and medical administration for 15 years before going to work for the El Paso County Public Defender's Office. She was hired as the first Master Social Worker in the Mental Health Unit. She is now a mitigation specialist and is part of the defense team in the Capital Murder Unit and has worked on many capital murder and death penalty cases
