Psychology and Sociology (Entering Grades 9-12)

This course introduces students to foundational concepts in Psychology and Sociology, focusing on how individual behavior is shaped by mental processes, relationships, culture, and social structures. Students will explore how people think, feel, and act, and how society influences identity, beliefs, and behavior. From a Psychology perspective, the course covers topics such as perception, learning, emotion, motivation, development, and mental health. From a Sociology perspective, students examine social norms, group behavior, culture, family systems, media influence, and social inequality. Emphasis is placed on understanding the connection between the individual and the broader social world. Students will analyze real-world examples, discuss contemporary issues, and practice critical thinking skills by examining behavior through both psychological and sociological lenses. The course encourages respectful discussion, self-awareness, and an evidence-based understanding of human behavior. By the end of the course, students will have a foundational understanding of key psychological and sociological concepts, an increased awareness of how society shapes behavior, and the ability to apply these ideas to everyday life and social issues.
